On Sunday, August 13th, the Manorville Fire Department was activated for a Vehicle Fire on the Eastbound Long Island Expressway between Exit 70 and 71. As the incident scene was very close to Exit 71, The Riverhead Fire Department was also activated to respond. The Manorville Units where at the Suffolk County Fire Academy, just wrapping up from a live burn drill when the call to respond was dispatched. Units 5-16-31, 5-16-32, 5-16-2, 5-16-7 responded from the Academy. Units 5-16-9 and 5-16-3 responded from their respective stations. The Riverhead FD Chiefs where first on scene and reported a working vehicle fire. 5-16-31 and 5-16-32 arrived shortly afterwards and advised the incoming Manorville units of a working vehicle fire. The vehicle was a pickup truck on their way to an event, the bed of the pickup had cooking appliances as well as 3 20lb propane tanks and other tanks filled with cooking oil. The first engine on scene was from Riverhead FD. Both Manorville and Riverhead Engines worked together to extinguish the fire. Tanker 5-16-9 from Manorville fed additional water to a Riverhead Engine. 2 of 3 3 Propane tanks valves blew off contributing to the extensive amount of fire, the 3rd tank was leaking and the members kept a line on it to keep it cool and disburse the leaking propane. The Brookhaven Fire Marshall's office was called in to investigate. Suffolk PD and Manorville Fire Police shut down the expressway for approximately 2 hours.
